Air Taxis in 2026: Sorting the Vertiport Hype from the Flight Plan

eVTOL aircraft are finally moving from science project to commercial reality — but the gap between the marketing and the certification paperwork is where the real story lives.

The year the category grew up

For a decade, electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft lived in render farms and investor decks. In 2026 that changed: the sector is widely described as graduating from a science project into early commercial reality, with capital rotating back into the leading names as flight testing gives way to operations.

Who is actually flying

The map is uneven, and geography matters. Dubai is positioned to launch the UAE's first city-wide commercial air-taxi service in 2026 using Joby Aviation aircraft and an initial set of four vertiports. In China, EHang secured the first commercial certification for its autonomous EH216-S, with commercial flights anticipated in early 2026. In the United States, Joby completed Stage 4 of FAA type certification in March 2026, with the Type Certificate itself expected late in the year — making it the front-runner for the first US commercial operations, supported by the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program beginning with trial flights in summer 2026.

Certification alone does not resolve commercial viability. The graveyard of the sector proves it.

The cautionary tales

The optimism is real, but so is the wreckage. Lilium entered insolvency in November 2024 after burning through roughly $1.8 billion without securing EASA type certification — a result that re-rated investor expectations across the European sector. More soberingly, Volocopter received limited EASA certification for its VoloCity in 2025 and still slid into insolvency, proving a hard truth: a certificate is necessary but nowhere near sufficient. Unit economics, infrastructure and demand have to line up too.

Why the timeline kept slipping

In the US, manufacturers once promised 2024 or 2025. The realistic debut is now discussed as a limited, market-specific launch — perhaps one or two routes in a single metro — in 2026 or 2027, contingent on FAA action that, as of early 2026, still lacked a finalised rule for commercial operations. The bottleneck was never the aircraft; it was the regulatory pathway and the vertiport, charging and air-traffic infrastructure around it.

What it means for 2040

Aerial mobility will not replace the street — it will sit on top of it, as a thin premium layer for time-critical trips and hard-to-reach links. For a productive city, the lesson is to plan vertiports as multifunctional energy-and-mobility nodes from the start, not bolt them on later. The cities that treat the third dimension as infrastructure, not spectacle, will be the ones where it actually works.
